FAQ: Brave New Worlds: A Race for Discovery!

Just how big is that playing surface when it's all laid out?

Each of the circular tiles forming the playing surface is 2 inches in diameter. That means that you’ll be covering an area a little over 20 inches in diameter for the 2-4 player board, and just over 26 inches in diameter for the 5-6 player board.

If we back at the Discoverer Level or above, and the game doesn't ship until Jan 2020, do we still get the print-and-play version in Jun 2019?

Yes! Pledge more than $10 and you’ll get the premium print and play files as soon as the designs for all components are finalized, which we expect should happen by June 2019. You can access a preliminary version of the print-and-play files (without 3D spacecraft models or the finalized design components) by clicking the link on the campaign page.

Wait... how does Kickstarter work again? When will I get charged, and when will I get my game?

Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform with a quirk: backers’ credit cards are only charged if we hit our funding goal. For Brave New Worlds our goal is $24,000, which is the minimum amount of money I need to place an order with my Chinese manufacturer, ship the games by ocean freight to America, and defray costs like customs fees and a small percentage from the kickstarter platform itself.

If we hit our funding target in 30 days, then we’ll get to make the game! That’s when your credit card will be charged, and when we’ll receive the money to begin placing orders with our manufacturer. But if we don’t hit our target, no money changes hands. The idea is that this system minimizes risk on both ends: for creators, it would be terrible if I only raised say $10k and then actually got that, because while that’s a ton of money it’s only half of what I’d need to place even a minimum order - I’d have your money, but wouldn’t be able to spend it! But since the money goes back to you if we don’t reach our goal, there’s no risk of that happening.

For backers, the same applies - if you back something that never ends up reaching it’s funding goal, there’s no risk to you because your credit card is never actually charged. But if we do hit our goal, you can rest assured that the creator has everything he needs to bring the project to a conclusion.

After the campaign concludes and we’ve reached our goal, I’ll spend about a month finalizing the design files and then begin sending them to my manufacturer for production. I’ll keep you updated throughout the process, and expect that the final games should be on your doorstep by January 2020!

Why are there "Shuttles" in the project video and "Crew Modules" in the main page?

When I first launched this project, I needed to choose a miniature that would represent human spaceflight, and I decided that the space shuttle was the most durable, recognizable symbol of humans in space out there. So I made prototypes, built ads, and filmed the video with the Shuttle standing in for the human spaceflight piece.

But after launching, I got some feedback from backers that the space shuttle is a weird choice for an interplanetary vehicle, because of course it was never capable of leaving low Earth orbit. So I did some polling, realized a lot of people felt this way… and decided to make a change. So Brave New Worlds will come with Crew Modules rather than shuttles! It’s hard to say goodbye to the Shuttle, but I want this game to be grounded in real science - seeing the Shuttle land on Pluto was enough to trigger people’s skepticism that the rest of the project might not be realistic as well.

You can read more about this decision in my April 20th Project Update.

However, I will be releasing the STL files for the shuttle and the crew module in the Premium Print and Play version! So if you’d like to print up your own shuttles, you totally can :D

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
